The 'Fern Crested Japanese Painted' is a variety of Japanese Painted Fern (Athyrium niponicum) known for its doubly crested frond tips. The most prominent cultivar is 'Crested Surf', a popular shade garden perennial introduced by Proven Winners.
Key characteristics of 'Crested Surf'
Distinctive foliage: It has arching, silvery-green fronds with deep red midribs, similar to the traditional Japanese Painted Fern. However, its standout feature is the unusual double-crested or doubly branched tips on each frond.
