The Australian Jungle Brake fern (Pteris umbrosa) is an evergreen, clumping fern native to the rainforests and wet sclerophyll forests of eastern Australia. It is known for its tall, bright green, ribbon-like fronds and is popular as both a garden plant and a houseplant.
Key Characteristics and Growing Conditions
Appearance: This fern has slender, elongated, glossy green leaves (pinnae) that are broadly attached to the stem, creating an airy, cascading look. It typically grows to a height of 40-70 cm (16-28 inches), though it can reach up to 2m in ideal outdoor conditions.
Habitat and Light: In its natural environment, it thrives in damp, shaded areas. When grown in gardens or indoors, it prefers full to partial shade or bright, indirect light; direct, harsh sunlight should be avoided as it can scorch the leaves.
