BLECHNUM SILVER LADY
Product Information
The Blechnum gibbum 'Silver Lady', or dwarf tree fern, is a compact fern with a symmetrical rosette of arching, bright green fronds. It is a popular choice for adding a tropical feel to gardens, patios, or indoor spaces due to its graceful, architectural form. This fast-growing plant is relatively easy to care for but requires specific conditions to thrive.
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Outdoors, a spot with partial or dappled shade is ideal, as direct sun can scorch the fronds.
ndoors, place it near a window, but out of direct sunlight.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. It is important not to let the soil dry out, as this can cause the fronds to brown. The frequency of watering can be reduced in the winter.
Humidity: The 'Silver Lady' fern thrives in high humidity, mimicking its native rainforest habitat. If grown indoors, especially in a heated home, misting regularly or using a pebble tray with water can help increase the humidity around the plant.
Soil: Use a moist, well-draining, and slightly acidic potting mix, such as an all-purpose mix with added peat moss.
Fertilizing: Feed the fern with a diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer once or twice a month during the spring and summer growing season. Do not fertilize in the winter.
Temperature: It is frost-tender and prefers warm conditions. If grown outdoors in a cold climate, it should be brought inside for the winter.
Repotting: Repot every two to three years in the spring to give the roots more room to grow.
Common problems
Brown, crispy fronds: This is a common sign of low humidity, underwatering, or too much direct sunlight.
Yellow fronds: This is typically a sign of overwatering or poor drainage, which can lead to root rot.
Pests: Look out for common houseplant pests such as mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites.
Lack of vigorous growth: Providing insufficient light can lead to leaf drop and a general failure to thrive.
