KAL Academy graduate competes in National Agriculture competition
KAL Group proudly supported Sydney Claassen, a graduate of KAL Academy’s recent entry into the prestigious
2024 Toyota New Harvest of the Year Competition.
Although Sydney did not secure a win, his participation underscores KAL Group’s confidence in its farmer development programme and the exceptional calibre of small- scale farmers it cultivates.
KAL Group’s decision to support Sydney’s journey highlights the company’s belief in the skills and knowledge imparted by KAL Academy, which prepares graduates to compete and excel at the highest levels in the agricultural sector.
The competition is highly regarded in South Africa. It recognises new-generation farmers who excel in innovation, resilience, and sustainability, giving them a platform for national recognition.

KAL Group’s Farmer Development Programme offered through KAL Academy, equips small- scale farmers with essential skills for commercial farming success. Each year, an average of 28 students join this fully funded programme, which has produced 515 graduates, including AgriSETA award winners.
Sydney grows a variety of produce all year round, including green beans, baby marrows, coriander, butternut, and tomatoes, focusing on sustainable farming and food security. Over three years, the farm has tripled its workforce, creating jobs through increased production.
Being a supplier for Woolworths highlights the farm’s commitment to excellence and hard work. They adhere to global standards, using pesticides and chemicals responsibly to ensure safe, high- quality produce for consumers. Modern farming prioritises health and safety over volume, focusing on delivering food of the highest quality.
