PRESS RELEASE – ALL MEDIAAMT AGRICULTURAL OUTLOOK CONFERENCE: 30 SEPTEMBER & 1 OCTOBER 2003:DATE: 10 OCTOBER 2003
The AMT agricultural outlook conference on 30 September and 1 October in Pretoria, with co-sponsors ABSA, Landbouweekblad, Agircultural Tours Worldwide, Farm-IT, Freshmark, Toits Motor Group, Louis Dreyfus Africa and Agrelek Eskom was a great success with 550 delegates attending both days. The audience consisted of producers, leaders in agribusinesses as well as government and a positive mood prevailed throughout the conference.

Minister Thoko Didiza said that the Government is still continuing on various fronts to negotiate for better market access internationally after the breakdown of the WTO talks in Cancun, Mexico. She emphasized the important role that agriculture plays in the SA economy as a whole. Minister Didiza said that deregulation was often complicated and that some role-players reacted negatively about it but that it resulted in more effectiveness in general and new opportunities were created as a result thereof. Land Affairs official Carmen van der Merwe said: “There is a need for improved focus, collaboration and co-ordination between public and private institutions.” She added that the current redistribution of land in SA is based on a willing buyer, willing seller approach.

Prof Lawrence Schlemmer (Markdata) said the Government has committed itself to a lowering of trade barriers and increased tariff protection for our farmers is unlikely as the imposition of higher tariffs will weaken our case in seeking markets abroad. He praised SA agriculture and said that it is adjusting well to international competition but also voiced his concerns about the great danger in official incapacity to support new small farmers. Other negative factors impacting on agriculture are the rural security problem, stock theft and production costs and he foresees a shift towards a consolidation of farms into larger units and an increase in company ownership in agriculture.

Dr Peter Barnard (Meat and Livestock Australia) has given a most informative presentation on the Australian situation in the meat industry, whilst Dr Herman van Schalkwyk, AMT CEO, asked the livestock industry once again to join forces to form a strong association and mentioned the more than 40 organizations currently in the livestock industry. According to Dr van Schalkwyk there is currently duplication action of energy and this leads to a waste of valuable funds. He also urged producers to stand together to survive the challenges in farming today.

Dr Christo Auret emphasized the unpredictability in the grain industry. He expects the price of white maize to increase marginally over the next few weeks, while he foresees that the price of yellow maize stays the same. Jannie de Villiers said that the volume of the past eight seasons’ maize crop was overestimated with 8,9% and thus R1,2 billion was paid in excess for the crops.

PERSVRYSTELLING
PERSVRYSTELLING: ALLE MEDIA – 10 OKTOBER 2003AMT LANDBOUVOORUITSKOU KONFERENSIE 30 SEPTEMBER & 1 OKTOBER 2003
